What does Google Ads cost in Australia?

Kacey Grant, 15 October, 2026

The short version 👇

  • Google Ads has no set price. You pay when someone clicks your ad, and the price of that click is set by an auction that re-runs on every search.
  • In Brisbane in October 2026, advertisers were paying anywhere from about $1 to $60 a click to reach the top of the page, depending on the service. A mechanic and an emergency plumber are in very different auctions.
  • You control the budget. There is no minimum spend, and Google will not charge more than 30.4 times your average daily budget in a month.
  • The right budget is not a number off a pricing page. It is worked backwards from what a customer is worth to you and how many clicks it takes to win one.
  • Management is a separate cost from ad spend. Good management saves more than it costs. Bad management just spends your budget faster.

“How much does Google Ads cost?” is the first question every business owner asks before switching a campaign on. Most answers online are either a global average that means nothing in Brisbane or a sales pitch dressed up as a guide. This one uses real numbers: what Brisbane advertisers were paying for 18 common local services in October 2026, pulled by the iSonic team straight from Google’s own Keyword Planner.

How does Google Ads pricing actually work?

Google Ads is an auction, and a stranger one than most. 🔨

Picture a property auction that re-runs every time someone types a search. The twist is that the auctioneer does not simply hand the keys to the highest bidder. They also judge how good each offer is for the buyer standing in front of them, and a better offer can win at a lower price. That is the whole system in a few lines, and it is why two businesses bidding on the same search can pay very different amounts.

In Google’s terms, your position is decided by three things:

  • Your bid. The most you are willing to pay for a click.
  • Your quality. How relevant your ad is to the search, how likely people are to click it, and how useful the page it lands on is.
  • The context. Where the person is, what device they are on, the time of day and what else is showing on the page.

You pay per click, not per view, on a standard search campaign, and the amount you pay is often less than your maximum bid, because you only pay what it takes to beat the ad below you. This is why, when iSonic takes over a Google Ads account, the first thing we check is not the bid. It is whether the ad and the page behind it actually match what people searched for, because that is the cheapest way to pay less per click.

What does a Google Ads click cost in Brisbane?

On 14 October 2026 iSonic pulled Keyword Planner data for 18 common Brisbane service searches. Google gives two figures for each one: a low range, roughly the 20th percentile of what advertisers have historically paid to appear at the top of the page, and a high range, roughly the 80th percentile. Between them sits the middle 60 percent of those top-of-page bids.

Source: Google Ads Keyword Planner, Brisbane targeting, 12-month average searches, pulled by iSonic on 14 October 2026. Top-of-page bids are Google’s estimates of what advertisers have historically paid. Your own cost per click depends on your ad, your page and who else is bidding on the day.

Three things stand out.

Urgency costs money. “Emergency plumber brisbane” starts at nearly double the low end of “plumber brisbane”. Someone with water coming through the ceiling does not shop around, and every plumber bidding on that search knows it.

The value of a customer sets the price of a click. Conveyancing and family law sit near the top because one client is worth thousands. Advertisers bid what a customer is worth to them, so high-value services attract high bids.

Busy does not mean expensive. Removalists get more searches than anything else on the list, yet their range is narrower than plumbers’. Search volume tells you how big the auction is, not how hard people are bidding in it.

Our own industry is on the list too. “seo brisbane” runs from $11.00 to $56.15, and it is part of why iSonic tells every client the same thing: a click is never cheap or expensive on its own, only relative to what a customer is worth.

How much should you spend on Google Ads?

Work backwards from a customer, not forwards from a budget. 🧮

Here is the maths iSonic runs with every new Google Ads client before recommending a spend. The numbers below are made up for illustration, so swap in your own.

StepExampleWhat it tells you
Gross profit from an average job$1,500What a customer is actually worth (use profit, not revenue)
Share you are happy to spend winning it20%$300 per new customer
Enquiries that become jobs1 in 3You can afford $100 per enquiry
Clicks that become enquiries1 in 10You can afford $10 per click

Now hold that $10 up against the table. If you are a landscaper, $10 a click sits above the whole Brisbane range, and Google Ads has room to work. If you are a plumber, $10 sits below the low end, so the maths only works if your page turns more than one click in ten into an enquiry, or your jobs are worth more than the example.

From there, the budget is simple. If you want 20 enquiries a month and can afford $100 each, that is $2,000 a month in ad spend. If that number makes you wince, the honest answer may be a smaller test, a narrower set of searches, or a different channel first. Sometimes iSonic’s recommendation is not to start Google Ads yet, and we would rather say so than spend your money proving it.

How does the Google Ads budget work?

You set an average daily budget, and Google spends around it.

According to Google Ads Help, on any single day Google can spend up to two times your average daily budget for most campaigns, because some days have more searches than others. Across the month it will not charge you more than 30.4 times your average daily budget. So a $50 a day campaign might spend $100 on a busy Monday, but the month will never cost more than $1,520.

A few other things worth knowing:

  • There is no minimum spend. You can start small, pause at any time and change the budget whenever you like.
  • GST is on top. Google bills Australian accounts with GST added, so check whether any budget you are quoted is before or after it.
  • Budget is not the same as cost per click. Your budget controls how much you spend in a day. Your bids and your quality control how many clicks that buys.

At iSonic we agree budgets with clients as a monthly figure, then set the daily amount Google needs, so the invoice at the end of the month is never a surprise. 🧾

Ad spend versus management: two different costs

Everything above is ad spend, the money that goes to Google. If someone else runs the account, there is a second cost: management.

Agencies charge for management in a few ways: a fixed monthly fee, a percentage of your ad spend, or a setup fee followed by a monthly fee. Whatever the model, good management should cover keyword research, negative keywords, ad copy, landing page advice, conversion tracking, regular checks and plain-English reporting on what the money produced.

Two things to watch for. First, a percentage-of-spend fee quietly rewards spending more, so ask how the agency decides when to recommend spending less. Second, make sure the ad account is yours. At iSonic every client’s Google Ads account sits in the client’s own name, on the client’s own card, with us given access to manage it. If you ever leave, the account, its history and its data stay with you. 🔑

As for what management costs, iSonic quotes it custom, free and with no obligation once we understand your goals, because a rate card cannot tell the difference between a one-suburb electrician and a national online store. Our Google Ads management covers everything listed above.

Where does Google Ads money get wasted?

Most wasted spend is not bad luck. It is settings nobody checked. 💸 These are the first things iSonic looks at when auditing an account someone else has been running:

  • Broad match with no negative keywords. Your “plumber” ad showing for “plumber apprenticeship” and “plumber salary”. Every one of those clicks is paid for.
  • Location settings left on the default. Google’s default targets people in your area or interested in it. A Brisbane tradie usually only wants people actually in the service area.
  • Clicks sent to the homepage. A search for “air conditioning installation” should land on a page about air conditioning installation, with calls to action that make the next step obvious. A landing page built to convert often does more for cost per lead than any bid change.
  • No conversion tracking. If calls and form fills are not counted, the campaign is bidding blind and so are you.
  • Search campaigns quietly running on the Display Network. Check the network settings on any search campaign. Banner ads on random websites are a different job with a different budget.
  • Ads running when nobody can answer the phone. An ad schedule costs nothing to set up.
  • Invalid clicks. Google filters clicks it judges invalid and does not charge for the ones it catches. Keep an eye on the invalid clicks column, and if a competitor or a bot is clearly a persistent problem, a click-fraud tool can block repeat offenders.

If your account has been running for a while and you are not sure about any of the above, a free website audit is a sensible first step, because half of these problems start on the page the ad sends people to.

Is Google Ads worth the cost?

It is worth it when three things are true: people actively search for what you sell, a customer is worth comfortably more than it costs to win one, and you can answer the phone or the enquiry quickly. Google Ads is at its best catching people at the moment they need you.

It is a poor fit when nobody searches for your service yet (a new product category, a long and invisible sales cycle), when your job value is too low to cover the click, or when you cannot respond fast enough to win the enquiry. In the first case, Facebook and Instagram ads are often the better start, because they put you in front of people before they search. Choosing between Google or Facebook ads comes down to whether your customers are already looking for you.

It is also not a replacement for organic search. Ads stop the day you stop paying; rankings keep working. Weighing up SEO or Google Ads is the right next question for most Brisbane businesses, and knowing what SEO costs and what a website should cost puts the whole budget in one picture. iSonic runs all three, which is why we can tell you honestly which one to start with, and where pay-per-click advertising fits next to the other two.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Google Ads cost per month?

There is no set monthly cost, because you choose the budget and Google has no minimum spend. iSonic recommends working the number out backwards: what a customer is worth, how many enquiries become customers, and how many clicks become enquiries. That gives you an affordable cost per click and a monthly budget that matches the number of enquiries you actually want.

Is $20 a day enough for Google Ads?

It can be enough to test a low-cost niche, but it is thin for a competitive one. At iSonic we run the maths first: $20 a day is at most $608 a month, which buys about 60 clicks at $10 each, or about 15 at $40. For a plumber or a conveyancer in Brisbane, where clicks often cost more than $10, that is rarely enough data to judge a campaign on.

How much does a Google Ads click cost in Brisbane?

It depends on the service, from about a dollar to about $60 at the top of the page. Keyword Planner data pulled by iSonic in October 2026 put “car detailing brisbane” at $1.19 to $2.97 and “emergency plumber brisbane” at $21.07 to $59.92, with most trades and professional services somewhere in between. Your own cost per click also depends on how relevant your ad and landing page are.

Do I pay Google if nobody clicks my ad?

Not on a standard search campaign: you pay when someone clicks, not when the ad is shown. Google also filters clicks it judges invalid and does not charge for the ones it catches. Some other campaign types, such as display and video, can be charged differently, which is one reason iSonic checks exactly which networks a search campaign is running on.

How much do agencies charge to manage Google Ads?

Agencies usually charge a fixed monthly fee, a percentage of ad spend, or a setup fee plus a monthly fee, and the right model depends on the size of the account. iSonic does not publish a rate card for Google Ads management. We quote it custom, free and with no obligation once we understand your goals, and the ad account always stays in your name.

Is Google Ads better than SEO?

Neither is better on its own; they do different jobs. Google Ads puts you at the top of the page today and stops when the budget stops, while SEO takes months to build and keeps working without paying per click. iSonic runs both, and for most local businesses we recommend using ads to win enquiries now while SEO builds the rankings that lower your cost per lead over time.

Let’s talk about your numbers

You came here for a straight answer, so here it is again: Google Ads costs whatever the auction charges for your searches, and the only budget that makes sense is one worked back from what a customer is worth to you.
