SEO or Google Ads for Brisbane Business?

Kacey Grant, 21 July, 2026

Every Brisbane business owner asks us the same thing eventually. Usually over a coffee, with a slightly worried look. “Should I be doing SEO, or running Google Ads?” ☕

Fair question. Your budget is not infinite, and both promise the same golden thing: more of the right people finding you on Google. So which one wins?

The short version

  • Usually both, but it depends. The right mix comes down to three things: how fast you need leads, how much you can spend, and how pricey the clicks are in your corner of Brisbane.
  • Google Ads is fast, SEO is durable. Ads switch on today and stop the day you stop paying. SEO takes months to build, then keeps working while you sleep.
  • Some clicks are too dear to buy. Competitive Brisbane search terms can cost AUD 100 or more per click, which is exactly when ranking organically is the smarter play.
  • The winners rarely pick a side. They lead with one channel, layer in the other, then shift the balance as the real numbers come in.

Should you choose SEO or Google Ads?

Usually both, but it depends. We know, that is the non-answer that makes you want to hang up, so let us take the two options in turn and see who each one suits.

What does SEO actually do for your business?

SEO, or search engine optimisation, is the work of getting your website to show up in Google’s normal (“organic”) results without paying for the click. You improve the site, earn the ranking, and the traffic keeps coming whether or not you spend that day. 🌱

Here is the one analogy worth holding onto: SEO is buying property, Google Ads is renting. Buying costs more up front, but once you own the ranking you stop paying every time someone knocks. Renting is quick and flexible, but the day you stop paying, you are out on the street.

It is the backbone of our search engine optimisation work, and it matters even more when you sell to a local market, which is the point of why local SEO matters.

The catch: SEO is slow to start. If you launched last Tuesday and need the phone ringing by Friday, it will not save you on its own. That is where the other option earns its keep, and our guide on what SEO costs in Brisbane lays out the numbers.

How does Google Ads work?

Google Ads is pay-per-click advertising, or PPC. You bid to appear at the top of the results, and you pay Google only when someone actually clicks. Turn it on this morning, get clicks this afternoon. Turn it off, and the traffic stops the same day. ⚡

If you would rather a team ran it properly than burn a budget learning on the job, that is what our Google Ads management is for, inside our wider paid ads work. For the basics, see our guide to how PPC works. The catch: the moment you stop paying, you vanish.

SEO vs Google Ads: the honest comparison

No fluff, just the trade-offs side by side.

SEO Google Ads
Speed Slow. Real movement in 3 to 6 months. Fast. Clicks within hours of going live.
Cost pattern More effort up front, cheaper per lead as it compounds. Steady spend forever. Stop paying and the traffic stops.
Longevity Durable. Rankings keep working after the work is done. Instant off switch. Visibility ends with the budget.
Best for Long-term growth and expensive-click terms. Fast leads, new sites, testing and seasonal pushes.

Neither column is the “right” one. They are tools for different jobs, and the skill is knowing which job you are doing.

When should you lead with Google Ads?

Lead with paid when speed matters more than efficiency:

  • You just launched a new site. Zero rankings, zero history. Ads put you on page one from day one while your SEO warms up.
  • You need leads urgently. Cash flow is tight and “three to six months” is not a timeframe you can live with. Ads bring enquiries this week.
  • Your business is seasonal. Switch ads on for the rush and off for the quiet, rather than waiting for rankings that peak after the season ends.
  • You are testing. Not sure whether “kitchen renovations Brisbane” or “bathroom renovations Brisbane” pulls better? Ads give you real data in a fortnight, so your SEO investment backs the winner.

When should you lead with SEO?

Lead with organic when the maths of paying per click stops making sense. The long game is the obvious case: if you will run this business in five years, owning your rankings beats renting them. But there is a sharper, Brisbane-specific reason.

Some search terms are savagely expensive to buy. In our own backyard, clicks on competitive agency and SEO-related terms can run north of AUD 100 each in Google Ads. One click. Not one lead, not one sale.

At 100 dollars-plus a click, buying your way to the top is a fast way to torch a budget. Ranking organically gives the same visibility without the per-click bleed, which is why we invest in our own SEO in Brisbane for terms like that rather than buying them. Picking a team that gets that difference matters, which is why we wrote how to choose an SEO agency in Brisbane.

Why do most Brisbane businesses run both?

In the real world, the businesses that win do not pick a side. They use each channel for what it is good at. 🤝

Google Ads covers the “right now”. SEO builds the “for years”. As your SEO strengthens on the pricey terms, you pull ad spend off them and point it where paying still pays.

Paid and organic are not rivals fighting over your budget. They are a relay team: one holds the lead while the other gets up to speed, then hands off. It is the thinking behind our broader digital marketing and lead generation work, and it delivers results that move the needle, not just the metrics.

Can one team really run both well?

Plenty of agencies do SEO. Plenty do Google Ads. Fewer do both, under one roof, actually talking to each other.

We do, and we keep it in-house rather than farming it out. The keyword data from your ads feeds your SEO, and your organic wins let us cut wasted spend on clicks you could have owned for free. Frequently asked questions

Is SEO or Google Ads better for my Brisbane business?
Neither is better across the board. Google Ads wins for fast leads and new sites, while SEO wins for long-term growth and terms that are too expensive to buy. At iSonic we usually recommend running both and shifting the balance as your rankings grow.

Should I do both SEO and Google Ads?
For most Brisbane businesses, yes. Ads cover the leads you need right now, while SEO builds visibility you will still have in five years. iSonic runs both under one team, so your ad data sharpens your SEO and your organic wins trim wasted ad spend.

How much do Google Ads cost in Brisbane?
It depends on your industry and how competitive the keywords are. Everyday local terms can be a few dollars a click, while competitive Brisbane agency and SEO keywords can run north of AUD 100 a click. iSonic gives you a free, no-obligation quote once we have seen the terms you want to target.

Which gives faster results, SEO or Google Ads?
Google Ads, for raw speed. You can be at the top of the results within hours of going live, whereas SEO generally takes three to six months to build momentum. iSonic often starts clients on Google Ads to cover the gap while their SEO warms up.

Can I just run Google Ads and skip SEO?
You can, and for a brand-new business it is often the right first move. The catch is that you are renting all your traffic, so the day you pause the ads you disappear. iSonic uses SEO to build visibility you own, so you stop paying for every single visit.

Do I need a separate agency for SEO and Google Ads?
No, and you are usually better off not. When one team runs both, the channels share data and stop competing for the same budget. iSonic handles SEO and Google Ads together, moving spend between them as your rankings grow.
