Blocked IP Address? How to Fix it

Matt Jackson 11 April, 2025

If you’re hosting your website or emails with iSonic Digital and you’re unable to visit your website, access cPanel, or use webmail, your IP address may have been blocked by our firewall. This article will guide you through identifying, understanding, and resolving a blocked IP address issue.

Why Does My IP Address Get Blocked?

A firewall is a security system designed to filter traffic and block suspicious or unauthorized access attempts. Some common reasons your IP may be blocked include:

  • Multiple Failed Login Attempts: If you enter incorrect login credentials multiple times in a short period, the firewall may block your IP to prevent unauthorized access. This applies to:
  • Website admin areas (e.g., WordPress backend)
  • cPanel login attempts
  • Webmail logins
  • FTP or SSH logins
  • Country-Based Restrictions: For security reasons, IP addresses from certain countries may be restricted from accessing the server.
  • Repeated Error Codes: Frequent HTTP errors such as 403 (Forbidden), 404 (Not Found), or repeated 4XX/5XX responses can trigger an IP block.
  • Port Scanning: Automated attempts to scan open ports on the server are considered suspicious and may result in an IP block.

How to Check if Your IP is Blocked

If you suspect your IP is blocked, follow these steps to confirm:

  1. Try a Different Connection: Disconnect from your current network and switch to another connection. For example, use mobile data instead of Wi-Fi.
  2. Check Website Availability: Use an online service like Down for Everyone or Just Me (https://www.isitdownrightnow.com) to determine if the website is inaccessible to everyone or just you.
  3. Check for Timeout Errors: If the website takes an unusually long time to load and eventually times out, it may indicate an IP block.

  4. Ask Your Hosting Provider: If you’re still unsure, contact our support team to check whether your IP is blocked.

How to Unblock Your IP Address

If your IP has been blocked, follow these steps to request an unblock:

  1. Find Your IP Address: Visit https://www.whatismyip.com or ip.supporthost.com to see your public IP address.
  2. Submit a Support Ticket: Contact our support team with the following details:
  • Your IP address
  • The error message you’re seeing
  • What action you were performing before the block (e.g., logging into cPanel, accessing webmail)

Once we receive your request, we will investigate and unblock your IP as soon as possible.

Preventing Future Blocks

To avoid getting blocked again, follow these best practices:

  • Use Correct Login Credentials: Ensure you’re entering the correct username and password before multiple attempts.
  • Use a Password Manager: This helps prevent mistyped credentials and reduces login failures.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Adding 2FA to your login process improves security and reduces failed login attempts.
  • Whitelist Your IP: If you have a static IP address, you may be able to whitelist it with our support team to prevent future blocks.
  • Properly Configure Email and FTP Clients: Incorrect configurations can lead to repeated failed login attempts.
  • Avoid Excessive Page Refreshing: If you encounter an error message, refreshing too many times may trigger a security rule and block your IP.
