Dugout Mafia Sports is a Queensland based specialist baseball and softball retailer built by people who live the game. They stock premium gear that is otherwise hard to find in Australia, including bats, gloves, catchers kits, protective gear and apparel from brands like Marucci, All Star and Goat’d. Alongside the retail range they offer team uniforms, glove repairs and a HitTrax equipped training facility with batting cage sessions bookable online.
As a brand new business, Dugout Mafia Sports was starting from a blank page. While the physical store and training facility took shape, all that existed online was a coming soon landing page we stood up early to hold the domain and start collecting interest. To open properly, they needed everything at once: a complete eCommerce store live from the first day of trading, a setup that worked with the Square point of sale they already used in store, visibility in Google for a niche range Australians typically had to import themselves, self service bookings for the batting cage, and a website that carried the bold, unapologetic energy of the Dugout Mafia brand.
We designed and built a WordPress eCommerce website purpose built to launch the business rather than simply present it. The centrepiece is a Square to WooCommerce integration: products, pricing and stock levels sync from the Square POS used in store, so there is no double data entry and no risk of selling stock they do not have.
Around that we built category first navigation, with a mega menu and homepage category grid organised the way players actually shop, live autocomplete search so customers can jump straight to a specific model, and online booking for HitTrax batting cage sessions. The design leans into the brand with black and hot pink, big type and real players, drawn from a custom homepage mockup and refined with the founder. Search fundamentals went in from day one, with clean structure, meta data and indexable category and product pages.
For a business that started with no online presence at all, the first year tells its own story. The store has processed over $15,000 in online sales since launch. Monthly sessions are up 95% year on year, from 763 in the first full month to 1,489 twelve months later, and monthly visitors are up 162%, from 410 to 1,076.
Comparing the first three months after launch with the most recent three months, organic search sessions are up 45% and organic visitors up 73% as more product and category pages rank. Direct traffic is up 69% over the same period, which is a new brand becoming a known one, with repeat customers typing in the name. Across the first 14 months the site has served over 68,000 page views to more than 11,000 new visitors, and the on site product search has been used thousands of times. Launching with the store, the bookings and the search all working meant every early visitor could become a customer.
